Television

A common household object that nowadays is being used by everyone is the television. There are lots of different channels such as sports channels and cartoon channels. We realise how important the television is when we are in hot water and to face the music we are not allowed to watch television.

From television we can learn new things such as words and languages like Italian. Yesterday, we watched the programme Mythbusters and learned a new expression that is ‘like a bull in a china shop’. Other educational programmes teach art lessons and from documentaries and quizzes you can learn new information.

When you are watching a programme usually it is interrupted by adverts. When we were smaller, we did not like the adverts because we would want the programme to continue. Now we are realising that the adverts can help us to choose what to buy and also where to go for a holiday.

Many people are curious about what is happening around the world so everyday they can watch the news. The local news is about what’s happening in your country and the foreign news is about other places in the world. The farmers and fishermen also watch the weather forecast to plan their day.

As they say all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. After a day working busily as a bee, everyone likes to sit on the sofa and watch television. On television you will find a huge variety of programmes for everyone. People who are sick or old like to spend their day watching entertaining programmes.  For children, there are cartoons and programmes in which even little children can learn something interesting. There are also DVDs for children and for adults.

As the saying goes all that glitters is not gold and television also has its disadvantages. Some people may get addicted to it. They would sit for hours watching television and become couch potatoes.  They get lazy and fat; their eyes begin to water and get red. Not all programmes are good for children and if children watch certain programmes they may become violent.

As the other things television has its good things and bad things. It depends on how we use television. We must be wise enough to know which programmes are good for us and which are not.

Il-Klassi silenzjuza

Darba wahda, eluf ta snin ilu, gewwa rahal imbieghed, kien hemm skola. Go din l-iskola kien hemm klassi ta tfal bil-ghaqal, li dejjem jaghmlu x-xoghol kollu, jobdu kull kelma li jghid l-ghalliem u ma jitilfux sekonda li hi sekonda mil-lezzjoni.

Imma sewwa jghidu li x-xitan m’ghandux halib u jaghmel il-gbejniet. Ghodwa wahda, waqt li l-istudenti kienu ghaddejjin bix-xoghol tas-soltu, fil-klassi fegg farfett magiku. dan il-farfett trasparenti kellu l-kapacita li jtir b’heffa tal-ghageb u peress li kien invizibli u hafif rixa lanqas biss kont tinduna li spicca mperrec fuq widnejk jew imniehrek jew fuq xaghrek.

Dan il-farfett magiku kellu missjoni. Xoghlu kien li jara kif din il-klassi jaqlibha ta’ taht fuq. Allura beda jpespes f’widnejn dik u f’widnejn l-iehor. Il-kliem imsahhar li beda jghid wassal biex l-istudenti jibdew jaraw lil xulxin daqs li kieku kienu draguni b’ sitt irjus, b’ghaxar widnejn, bi snien jaqtghu daqs xafra u b’par gwienah li hekk kien jinfethu kienu jghattu r-raggi tax xemx. Ghalhekk peress li bdew jaraw lil xulxin koroh, ma ridux ikellmu aktar lil xulxin u hadd ma ried joqghod fejn l-iehor.

Ghall-ewwel, il-povru ghalliem ma setax jifhem x’ beda jigri, kif nofs l-istudenti bdew jinbidlu fi draguni ta’ sitt irjus u kif dan is-seher beda jinfirex b’ ritmu mghaggel ma kulhadd. Izda fittex minn hemm u qalleb minn hawn, fl-ahhar sab ktieb tal-magija li jiftakar lil Adam u Eva. Fih kien hemm is-soluzzjoni li ggib il-paci. Ghalhekk redden l-erba’ kelmiet magici u duhhan misterjuz mela kullimkien. Hekk kif id-dahna ghebet, it-tfal regghu inbidlu fl-angli tas-soltu, bil-gwienah bojod iperpru, bir raggiera tonda tonda (ta whud kienet ovali) u bid-dija hierga minn wicchom.

Izda is-seher kellu effett stramb, bhal ma jigri meta tiehu xi medicina u jkollok lista shiha ta sied effects. L-ghalliem induna li l-istudenti kienu mmutaw u biex tghaxxaqha, hekk kif kienu jghidu kelma, quddiemhom kienet tfegg berqa roza u minn gol-berqa taqa’ karta. Din il-karta kienet ggieghlek tibda tikteb fuqha bla waqfien, sakemm tinhlielek il-linka jew idek tigi vjola jew il-biro tibda tisparkja.

Il-problema hija li l-istudenti spiccaw kollha wicc Laskri, jistennew li tfigg il-berqa roza bir-rigal abbinat maghha. Mill-banda l-ohra, l-ghalliem beda jibza’ li jekk jnehhi s-seher, jerga jfigg il-farfett invizzibli li jibdel it-tfal fi draguni. Allura x’ser jigri? Min ser isib is-soluzzjoni kif jitnehha s-seher u fl-istess hin il-farfett magiku jibqa ‘l barra mill-klassi? Iz-zmien ghad jaghtina parir.

Il-Karnival

Wahda mill-festi  tradizzjonali Maltin huwa l-karnival li jsir ezatt qabel ma jibda r-Randan li hu zmien ta’ penitenza u talb.

Dan ilu jsir minn zmien il-kavallieri u x’aktarx li beda fl-elf hames mija u hamsa u tletin.  Il-karnival huwa zmien ta bluha u hafna nies jilbsu kostumi kuluriti u tad-dahk li trid seba’ ghajnejn biex tarahom.  Matul dawn it-tlitt ijiem li jdum il-karnival isiru diversi festi fl-irhula ta Malta u t’Ghawdex, fosthom in-Nadur u Marsalforn Ghawdex, izda il-qofol tieghu jkun fil-Belt Valletta fejn isir l-isfilata tal-karrijiet dekorattivi, maskri grotteski, karretuni, karozzi mzejna u hafna ohrajn.

Hafna nies immoru jaraw iz-zfin bil-kumpanija tal-kostumi.  Gieli daqs kemm ikun hemm nies il-pjazza tkun mimlija daqs bajda u hadd ma jkun jista’ jiccaqlaq.  Dawk li jiehdu sehem fl-isfilata tal-karnival jibdew minn xhur qabel bix-xoghol tal-karrijiet u jonfqu mijjiet ta’ ewro li juzawhom kemm biex jiddekoraw il-karrijiet kif ukoll fuq il-kostumi li jilbsu z-zghazagh li jifformaw il-kumpanija fuq il-karru.

Tinzifen ukoll il-Parata li tfakkarna fir-rebha li l-Maltin u l-kavallieri kellhom fuq it-Torok fl-Assedju l-Kbir tal-elf hames mija hamsa u sittin. Ta’ min isemmi wkoll il-Kukkanja u l-Qarcilla li kienu zewg attrazzjonijiet taz-zmien il-kavallieri li llum il-gurnata sfortunatament m’ghadniex narawhom. Iz-zifna nazzjonali ta’ Malta maghrufa bhala l-Maltija, tinzifen f’dawn il-jiem mit-tfal tal-iskejjel. Is-Sibt filghodu jkun maghruf bhala l-Karnival tat-Tfal.

Tabilhaqq dan huwa zmien ta’ bluha! U x’hemm hazin li wiehed jinsa ghal ftit jiem is-serjeta, l-inkwiet, l-istudju, ix-xoghol u jiddeverti!

When I found a puppy

It was a Tuesday and I had a hard day. My teacher gave the class lots of work and I was dead tired. I walked home as slow as a sloth and I also had a headache. Then I heard whining but when I looked I saw nothing.

I kept on walking but then my heart missed a beat as I thought that from the corner of my eye I saw a fat rat. But it was just a little puppy with a fluffy tail and floppy ears. I picked it up and it was very light. It was as skinny as a skeleton and it was white with brown ears.

I held him to my chest to warm it. Its tail was between its legs. I knew mum would not let me keep him but I took him home anyway. Luckily that day, I didn’t eat my lunch so I gave the roll with salami to the puppy as he was starving to death. In a blink of an eye he ate the whole roll. Then I gave him some water in my plastic lunch box.

I thought that Floppy was a good name for him for he had floppy ears. First I patted him so he would feel confident with me and then I put him in my bag. Although I knew my mum hated dogs I still hoped and prayed that she would adore him and let me keep him.

Finally I arrived home. I was a few minutes late so my parents wanted to know what had happened. I told them I stayed at school talking to my friends. Then I told my parents I was going to go to do my homework. I kept on playing with Floppy and then my mother called me to go and eat my soup.

That same day I went to buy some puppy food for Floppy. His bowl of water was always full. I kept Floppy in my room for three days. One day, while I was at basketball practice, my mum went in my room to put some of my clothes in their place. Then something touched my mother’s foot and she was scared to death. You could hear my mother from seven miles away screaming her head off.

When I went home from basketball my mum shouted at me for not telling her about the puppy. I told her I was sorry but she did not listen to me. My mum told me I had to give Floppy away. My heart was broken in a million pieces, but I had no choice. My mum suggested giving him to my grandma and I accepted.

I was happy to give him to my grandma not somebody else. I visited Floppy, and my grandma everyday. Floppy soon adapted and he grew older. He was not a large dog but he was cute and friendly. He was a dream dog which I loved with all my heart.

Music

There are many different types of instruments. In our case we play the piano and the guitar. We enjoy playing these instruments. They sound very nice especially with other instruments.

PIANO:

  • The piano has white and black keys.
  • This instrument has black keys that are called sharps and flats.
  • The piano consists of two clefs that are the Treble Clef and the Bass Clef.
  • It is divided in groups of three and four.
  • The piano is usually played with both hands.
  • The piano notes are from A – G.

 GUITAR:

  • The guitar has six strings.
  • There are two types of guitars: the folk guitar and the classic guitar.
  • The strings can be open strings when you only play the string.
  • There are also strings that you have to press the upper part of the guitar to play them.
  • The guitar also has two clefs that are the Treble Clef and the Bass Clef.
  • The right hand fingers are called P I M A but you don’t use the little finger.
  • The left hand fingers are called 1 2 3 4 as you don’t use the big finger.

We write the notes on a stave that consists of five lines and four spaces. We consider music as a hobby and as a way to relax. If you were thinking of playing an instrument we are sure you will enjoy it as we do.

A terrible Sea Storm

One sunny afternoon Jim and Tom wanted to go fishing on their rowing boat which they had just repaired in Tom’s garage. They asked their mother and they said that they could go. So they set off with their fishing rods and fishing bait that afternoon. Both of them were hoping to catch some big fish. They wanted to be fishermen like their fathers!

Jim and Tom got the small rowing boat and lifted it into Tom’s father’s truck and then Tom’s father took them to the jetty. He helped them slide the boat into the water. They thanked him and he shouted that they should be safe and he drove away. The boys started putting their fishing equipment in their small boat. As they were putting their fishing rods in the boat, they saw some fishermen. They had a big bucket full of big fish and they were carrying a big swordfish! Jim and Tom’s mouths dropped. They were so amazed and they wanted to catch fish like that.

Then Jim and Tom got in the boat and started rowing towards the horizon and out of the harbour. Once they were out of the harbour, the sun started to disappear behind huge grey clouds which were looming over the horizon. They only thought it was going to rain and they would be fine. But without the boys realising, all the boats started to go back into the harbour. But the boys kept fishing and did not realise that a strong current had dragged them further out to sea. They still were too focused to look up. All they wanted was to catch at least five big fish each.

The boat started bobbing with the waves. Then  a huge wave hit them and they realised that they were in the open ocean alone and that there was a big storm brewing. They were scared out of their wits and their legs turned to jelly! Then the boat suddenly capsized. Jim and Tom panicked and swam towards some rocks but the waves kept pulling them back into the dangerous waters. Finally they arrived on the rocks. Jim had a big cut on his leg from the sharp rocks and Tom had a black spike in his arm from the sea urchins stuck onto the rough rocks. They were very far from home, so they just got their breath back and then tried to seed what they were going to do. As they were thinking of a plan, they saw a big fishing boat heading for the harbour.

They jumped for joy and waved their hands in the air so the crew from the fishing boat would see them. Then the big boat turned round and started heading for them. They were so glad that they were going to be safe at last! Then they saw their small rowing boat in a thousand pieces floating in the sea. They were a bit upset that they spent all that time working on it but they were just thankful that they were safe! The boat’s crew had climbed onto the rocks to get the boys and give them blankets to keep warm. Once they had arrived on the jetty, one of the crew gave the boys a big fish each. They thanked him and walked back home. When they got back they told their parents the whole story and they were also very glad that they weren’t badly hurt!

The boys learnt that they should check the weather next time they go fishing. Since the terrible sea storm they have built another boat, since the other one is ruined and next time they are taking life jackets for safety. They have learnt that their lives are worth more than a few fish!

A Day with a mermaid

One day I was at my grandmother house and I was watching T.V. but I got bored so I told my grandmother if I could go down to the seaside which is a stone’s throw away from my grandmothers house and she said I could.

So I got my rock shoes, my bucket, my spade, a towel and my wet suit and I went down. The waves were calm and the sun was shining so I sat down on the rocks. I picked up lots on shells and put them in my bucket. Then suddenly something caught my eye. I looked at the sea and saw something with a long blue shine tail go past. I rubbed my eyes, then looked again. There it was again but this time it went past even faster so I couldn’t quite see it. I didn’t know what to do. On one hand I wanted it to come back but on the other hand I didn’t know what it was so I didn’t want it to come back.

I looked in the sea but there was no sign of it. So I turned around to check if there was anyone else in the area. I turned back around and I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a mermaid sitting on the rocks right in front of me. I looked at her long shiny blue fish tail and long brown wavy hair and sparkling blue eyes. I told her hello and asked her if she was English or Maltese. She told me she spoke English. I asked her what her name was and she said her name was Tinkerbelle. I told her my name was Aston. So she told me that my name was nice and I told her that hers was too.

Then she asked me if I wanted to go under the sea with her and she could show me around. But I told her that I can’t hold my breath for long. So she jumped in the water and got me a pink shiny shell. She told me to breathe in it for a few seconds then stop. So I did and a long pink tail appeared on me. I was so excited to have a fish tail I was a mermaid. We held hands and dived into the water. I opened my eyes and I could see everything every clearly and I could understand Tinkerbelle clearly. I asked her if there were any more mermaids and mermen. She told me that there weren’t many left.

First she showed me a rock that was covered in all different coloured sea weed. Lots of fish lived near it, mostly rainbow fish. They were quite big, the size of a child’s hand and of course they were the colour of the rainbow. Next we saw anemones where clown fish like Nemo lived. They were quite small but there were a lot of them. Then we saw a rock full of hermit crabs. Their shells were all different colours with different designs on them. I walked up to one and touched it and as soon as I did it went straight back in its shell.

After she showed me all that we went a bit deeper into the sea and she went under the sea and whistled. Two dolphins swam towards us. We climbed on their backs and they took us for a ride. It was so much fun! Then the sun started to set so the dolphins left. Tinkerbelle and I swam back to where I was sitting. I got out of the water and she got the pink shell again and I breathed in it again and in two seconds, the tail was gone. But before I left Tinkerbelle took the necklace from around her neck. It had a small pink shell tied to it and she put it in my hand and told me to keep it. I looked at the sea and when I looked up she was gone.

I went home that night but I never told anyone what had happened. I woke up the next morning and I ran down to the seaside but there was no sign of Tinkerbelle. So I walked back home to my grandmother’s house. I thought it was all a dream but when I went to the room where I was sleeping I saw the necklace on my bed!

A Day with an Alien

One day I was playing in my grandma and granddad’s garden. Then suddenly I looked up at the sky and saw some big silver splodge coming towards me. It got closer and closer and the suddenly bang, it landed in my granddad’s shed.

My heart skipped a beat. I didn’t know what to do so I decided to walk slowly up to the shed. My legs turned to jelly I had no idea what was in there. I slowly opened the door and it started to squeak. I  popped my head in and saw a blue skinned thing which was about one metre high. It had one head with two big green eyes and one blue nose with a one pink mouth. It also had four blue antennae. Two were long and two were short.  They had little pink balls on the end. It had four arms with four hands and four fingers. It also had four feet with four toes and four nails.

So walked in and said hello and asked it if it speaks English. So it slowly replied yes. So I asked it what its name was and that my name was Aston so it said that its name was Sarlet and that she came in peace. I just laughed and told Sarlet not be afraid of me. I asked her how she got here. She told me that she came from a far away planet called Haloona and she was bored so she went in her dad’s garage and started to play around with her dads rocket, then suddenly it took off and she didn’t know how to work it so she crashed in the granddads shed.

Then I asked her about her family and friends. She told me she had three sisters and four brothers. She told me how she had lots of friends but her best friend was called Melody. I told her how I had only one brother and that I had lots of friends but my best friend was called Tilly. I asked her about her planet and she told me that it was quite big but when it rained, it rained sweets. I told her how lucky she was to have a planet where it rained sweets andto have lots of brothers and sisters.

I helped her fix her dad’s rocket. Then it was started to get dark and I told her I should go inside to my grandma so she said that she would go back to Haloona but before she left, she gave me a bracelet for a souvenir so I would never forget her. Then she left so I went inside to grandma and Granddad. I didn’t tell them what happened because it was mine and Sarlet`s secret.

The next morning I woke up and thought it was all a dream but then I looked on my desk and saw the bracelet and I knew I would never ever forget my day with an alien.

The Treasure and The Lepricorn

The Treasure And The Lepricorn

One sunny afternoon Kelly and Sophie went for a picnic in the woods. They sat next to the lake under all the trees and started eating their sandwiches. Then they saw a deep hole a few metres away from them and wondered what it was. That was when curiosity killed the cat and they went over to the hole and suspiciously looked down it and saw something shining with the reflection of the sun on it.

Kelly and Sophie got really excited. They thought  they were going to be rich! They slid down the hole with their eyes closed and landed in a pile of sand. Then they both opened their eyes and found that they were surrounded by golden blocks. There were hundreds of them! There eyes looked like they were popping out because they were so amazed! They decided not to tell anyone not even their brothers and sisters and especially not their parents! After talking about their surprising discovery, they realised there was another door in the corner. The situation got even fishier. The door had rusty hinges and it was wooden. All the paint was flaking off and it was so small, it looked like a dwarf’s door!

Finally they knocked on the tiny door and there was no answer, so they tried again. After a few minutes the door opened with a screaming squeak and a green thing opened the door. Kelly and Sophie’s legs had turned to jelly and their mouths were wide open as they were shocked. It looked like Kelly was rooted to the ground and it also looked like Sophie was ice frozen!

They woke up and found themselves sitting in front of a fire place. They had fainted while looking at the green monster that had answered the door, but they were in his house! The green little monster was a lepricorn. He had orange hair that looked like he never washed and green clothes that were ripped. He was only about three feet tall. Kelly asked what his name was and how old he was, not hoping to get an answer. But surprisingly, he spoke English. He replied that his name was Grinch and he was two thousand, seven hundred and ninety nine years old! They were astonished!

Then they asked were all the gold had come from and if it was his. He told them that the gold belonged to his great, great grandfather and that he had died a few hundred years ago. He also said that he had never been outside in over eight hundred years! They asked how he survived without having food and water. He said that lepricorns don’t need any food or water! We decided to take him out of his underground mine and take him into the outside world. He agreed that they could take him outside. He put his coat on and they climbed up the hole. He realised that it had changed so much since he had been there. He danced around the trees realising that he had never had so much fun! Every afternoon Kelly and Sophie came to the woods and saw Grinch.

Kelly and Sophie were proud that they helped him and Grinch was now happy that he could go outside. He still lives in the underground mine. He still guards the gold with his life in honour of his great, great grandfather.
